Crete Middle School

September Newsletter

Note from the Principal:

Dear Families of Crete Middle School,

It has been a great start to the year, and I am so impressed with our students and the energy they are bringing to school each day. Thank you for your partnership in helping every student succeed. One of the most important factors in learning is being present every day—attendance truly matters. We also encourage you to regularly check in with your student about their grades and missing assignments, and to have conversations at home about our school expectations and policies.

When students see that families and the school are working together, they know they have a strong team supporting them. Thank you for your commitment to helping your child make this a successful year.

Mrs. Jaimes, Principal

  • 6th and 7th graders with any missing assignments will stay until 4:00.

  • 8th graders with fewer than 5 missing assignments will stay until 4:00.

  • 8th graders with 5 or more missing assignments will stay until 5:00.

During this time, students will receive help from teachers and have time to complete missing work. This applies to all students, including athletes and bus riders. If your child cannot stay on a Wednesday, please call the office to arrange another time.

Please check the Infinite Campus Parent Portal every Tuesday evening to see if your child has missing work. If you need a Parent Portal account, call the Middle School at 826-5844.

Important CMS Expectations and Procedures

During the first week of school, principals met with each grade level to review important middle school expectations. It is important that all students are clear on what is expected of them. In the attachment, you will find the information that was covered during those meetings. Please take a few minutes to review it so we are all on the same page in supporting students.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Jaimes or Mr. Newmyer.

Random Drug Testing

Crete Middle School conducts random drug testing as outlined in Board Policy 5306, which can be found on our district website. As a courtesy, Crete Public Schools allows a parent or guardian to be present during the testing process. We encourage you to review the procedures at https://www.creteschools.org/page/parentguardian-presence-at-testing to ensure you are familiar with the process.

Safety

  • Photo identification will be required when picking up students from the office during the school day. This measure is being implemented to ensure the safety and security of all our students.  We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

  • Our school will continue to use The “I Love U Guys” Foundation’s Standard Response Protocol (SRP). Students and staff will be training, practicing, and drilling the protocol.

  • The premise is simple - five specific actions could be performed during an incident. When communicating these, the action is communicated first with one common word and then simple directions.  For example, if sheltering from severe weather, the students would be told "Shelter.  Tornado sirens are sounding.  Evacuate to a sheltered area."  Execution of the action is performed by active participants, including students, staff, teachers, and first responders.

  • The SRP is based on the following actions: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter.  Please see the attached document for more informal

Attendance Updates:

Did you know...?

Children’s mental health is important. Students who miss just 2 days of school a month tend to be more stressed and anxious. Help lower student stress by encouraging attendance when students are feeling well.
